Well Done.

I found this book to be informative, supportive and to have about the right amount of tough love.
I struggled with Wes' halting reading style at first but settled into it within the first couple of chapters. The section on medication was especially helpful. the vignette at the start of each chapter brought the material into more real focus too.
This book is well worth the time taken to listen.

Emotional, insightful, powerful

I was recently diagnosed at age 25 and this book helped me comprehend what the diagnosis meant in my own life really well. I was even emotional at some points reading about destructive behaviours that I've always had that I now have an answer for. Prepare yourself... Dr Wes running through the 13 principles checked off a lot of common themes for me, and the examples he gives of 'clients' are helpful, albeit a little indulgent. Stick through the bratty teens/college students in the first chapters. His intonation is a bit annoying to start off with, but you can tell that he's coming from a place of empathy and love for people with ADHD. A nice contrast to Dr Russel Barkley. If you're looking for great ADHD books - my advice is look for people who either have ADHD or love someone with ADHD, they tend to be a lot more empathetic and kind rather than treating it like a sickness. If you liked this, I'd recommend Faster than Normal by Peter Shankman. Nice non-medical perspective from a highly-functional eccentric businessman.

Very detailed and helpful

A solid overview with real empathy for those living with ADHD and those who love them. Definately reccomend.

A Touching book with deep and useful insites!

I've read many books on ADHD and never have I found one that was as frank and upfront about what its like living with ADHD as an adult. The fact that Dr Wes is also the narrator adds a touch of authenticity to his message and you can really feel hat he has your best interests at heart. this is a definite must read if you think your or a loved one has ADHD or if you were recently diagnosed as a teen or adult!

Lifts the Fog

Steve Jobs said that we can only join the dots by looking backwards- to explain who we are and how we got here. But there is comfort in doing that.

Dr Wes brilliantly presents a deep and sympathetic understanding of ADD- as a fellow traveller and a pragmatic guide. For many adults, who have ADD, the vignettes he recounts will have a strong resonance with a lot of lightbulb moments.

The book is invaluable for anyone with ADD - offering many pieces of advice on actions to help straighten up and fly right.

There is much discussion on the thorny topic of medication. For some, even many people, medication will prove a godsend, but it is anything but straightforward.

Tinkering - and that’s what it is - with brain chemistry can be a long journey with many pitfalls. The drugs work for some and not for others, with widely variable dosages and a myriad of combinations. And the process of finding the “right” combination is an endless dance of trial and error, stepping around serious side effects.

It’s not Dr Wes’ fault - he presents the facts- but the message of “suck it and see” is not pretty. And neither is it good science. So much of staying on a less distracted pathway relies on - or alternatively - is confounded by side effects. For some folks the stimulant drugs work well- for others, they make the distractions run faster, cause a lack of appetite, and sleep problems as well as a risk of dependency.

Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the book is that it supports people with ADD by creating a sense of belonging to a community of fellow travellers on this often rough road.

this book is very boring

3 chapters in and they're still talking about nothing.. waste of my time, I'm so annoyed I paid for it
