Publisher's Summary

The perfect book for the spirituality sceptics who really do need meditation in their daily routine.

10% Happier is a spiritual book written for - and by - someone who would otherwise never listen to a spiritual book. It is both a deadly serious and seriously funny look at mindfulness and meditation as the next big public health revolution.

Dan Harris always believed the restless, relentless, impossible-to-satisfy voice in his head was one of his greatest assets. How else can you climb the ladder in an ultracompetitive field like TV news except through nonstop hand-wringing and hypervigilance?

For a while his strategy worked. Harris anchored national broadcasts, and he covered wars. Then he hit the brakes and had a full-blown panic attack live on the air. What happened next was completely unforeseen. Through a bizarre series of events - involving a disgraced evangelical pastor, a mysterious self-help guru and a fateful gift from his wife - Harris stumbled upon something that helped him tame the voice in his head: meditation.

At first he was deeply suspicious. He had long associated meditation with bearded swamis and unwashed hippies. But when confronted with mounting scientific evidence that just a few minutes a day can literally rewire the brain for focus, happiness, and reduced reactivity, Harris took a deep dive. He spent years mingling with scientists, executives and marines on the front lines of a quiet revolution that has the potential to reshape society. He became a daily meditator and even found himself on a 10-day silent meditation retreat, which was simultaneously the best and worst experience he'd ever had.

Harris' life was not transformed into a parade of rainbows and unicorns, but he did gain a passion for daily meditation. While the book itself is a narrative account of Dan's conversion amid the harried and decidedly non-Zen world of the newsroom, it concludes with a section for the novice on how to get started.

10% of Dans life rather than a self help book

Self indulgent wander through a period in Dan Harris's life with the emphasis on him rather than getting 10% happier. Clickbait title but interesting story. Ends abruptly leaving the reader confused.

Tedious, unhelpful, autobiographical meanderings

I concede that I couldn't finish this book past the 4-hour halfway mark. 99% of the content up to that point had no relation to the title of the book and the irrelevance irritated me to no end. The other 1% was simply - learn to meditate and be mindful.
I was hoping for relatable, concrete advice on finding that 10% happier state of being, but listening to this self-indulgent waffle frustrated me to no end. Don't be mistaken, this is not a self-help book, this is an autobiography by an atheist who explores mundane personal life details that have no relevance in improving the listener's journey.

The Case for Buddhism in Cinemas Soon

To the Moon!
i have read not less than a hundred books on the topic from every angle imaginable, so i thought.
But it just proves once again, give a well connected investigative journalist a taste of devine wisdom, the world will be a better place.
(i am referencing the book, and film called The Case for Christ. Agapé is pretty primo stuff too, Dan.)

Ooops! Back to my review...
If i were Dan's employer, I'd make it a priority to produce Dans story as a documentary or Netflix Series (so we can watch downundah.)

Why? So that we can meet these people, see these places, read these books referenced and hear the authors, and see the scientific evidence... proof that meditation improves our brains in all the places we need, for the sake of human survival.(Thrival).

Please Dan, make it an all star cast. Well done. Very influential writing. Keep up the good work. Congrats on your 2 dream gigs, and Thank You for sharing your journey.

nice mix

I really enjoyed this. it was largely a memoir but i found the stories intersecting and it was still very useful with great tips for my own mindfulness journey.

Worth it!!

This is one of those audio books where you want to drive the long way home so you can hear more of the book :)

Found this book both educational and really interesting. I think I’d put myself in a similar bracket to Dan, somewhat cynical about the concept of Buddhism/Mindfulness and people like Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle...so it was great that he’s done all the work of stripping away the religion and fluff, and shared his practical learnings. Some sections seemed to wander or drag a little, but in hindsight they help add context to Dan’s personal story, and it ends really strong. I couldn’t wait to hear his ultimate guidance/framework. Probably not a good idea to skip to the end though, as you will inevitably lose a lot of the context.

Loved it, and will recommend it to others (already have done).

Took a while

This book really didn't start talking about meditation until over half way through. I found it hard to listen to the backstory without wondering how it will all fit in

honest and relatable

This was a great introduction to the journey into mindfulness for Dan! it showed how his healthy skepticism and the profound influence of people and circumstances created an opportunity to grow. he Also gave a brief recount of a 10 day silent retreat which makes me wonder if I should give it a go. overall, loved this book!

Interesting enough autobiography

Decently motivating to get into meditation, 80% of the book us about his tv life, mildly interesting.

Self involved

I picked this book up after seeing The Minimalists documentary a few years ago. I wanted to learn a bit more about the benefits of meditation. This book is ok for those who are interested in learning about the life of the author or learning more about the machine that runs competitive media and the never ending chase of some humans to top others and get ahead. This has not been my world for a long time and I think I just expected something different having seen a small segment on The Minimalists documentary. Some insightful pieces and epiphany moments but nothing that struck me as profound for someone who is not competitive and has zero interest in the nonsense that is the corporate media machine.
