Publisher's Summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

Confronting but effective

Hard to listen to at times due to emotional discomfort. Brought a lot of family stuff to the surface I was unaware still affected me but also gave practical tools to deal with it.

Required reading for humanity

This book is in my view one of the single most important books for setting a foundation for spiritual growth. If spiritual growth is a journey, then this book is the bag which holds the nourishment you need to complete the journey

...meh

He connects everything to ’shame’ as if it plays a role in every aspect of our lives but he lost me when he said it was impossible for someone who experiences shame to love them selves.

Excellent read

John Bradshaw has put together a masterfull introduction to the shame that binds us. Thought provoking and insightful in many ways, it makes me question the shame surrounding my experience and ways to work through it. Worth a second listen.

A lot of information

I listened to most of the book at x0.95 speed as there was a lot of information packed into the sentences. As I listen to audio books mostly on the go, it would helped me if I had the meditation exercises on paper/pdf as well, so as to be able to follow them accordingly after listening to the book.

Life changing

The only thing that would improve this audiobook is if the narrator read the meditations in real time so that you could do them while listening i.e. when he says “20 seconds” he actually waited 20 seconds until he read the next step of the meditation.
