Publisher's Summary

Longlisted for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2007.

He is one of the most haunting characters in all of literature.

At last the evolution of his evil is revealed.

Hannibal Lecter emerges from the nightmare of the Eastern Front, a boy in the snow, mute, with a chain around his neck. He seems utterly alone, but he has brought his demons with him.

Hannibal's uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle's beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki.

Lady Murasaki helps Hannibal to heal. With her help he flourishes, becoming the youngest person ever admitted to medical school in France.

But Hannibal's demons visit him and torment him. When he is old enough, he visits them in turn.

He discovers he has gifts beyond the academic, and in that epiphany, Hannibal Lecter becomes death's prodigy.

Pleasantly surprised...

This was a lot better than I expected - I have the book but couldn't get into it, so I put off listening to this for ages, but once I started I didn't want to "put it down". If you love the other books in the series I recommend this one as it gives an interesting background, but read it last, in the order it was written - it's not so interesting if you don't already understand where he ends up... I think, anyway.

Not as good as others in the series

I did not enjoy this book as much as others in the series. it was very much set in WW2, and I found the political aspects difficult to follow. It was well-researched, but I found my attention wandering often. The Author does a great job of narrating.

Personally...

I found this more enjoying thinking that this Hannibal was separate from the Hannibal in the other three novels. Knowing too much back story for me lessens the mystic of the great character.

E-Lecter-ic

I love this series. Narration was good. Story was amazingly well written. Enjoyed learning the origins of the infamous cannibal. Rooting for him doesn't seem so bad in this tale.

wonderful delivery from Harris

I really enjoyed the production on this audio book. hearing it in the author's own voice was a treat. his performance was excellent - the many varied accents and characters were delivered really well. Possibly my favourite in the Hannibal series. bravo!

A'ight I guess...

It was okay, but not great. Really enjoyed the back story of how Hannibal became the villian we all love but damn it was hard to stay engaged.
