Publisher's Summary

For 1000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious Lords manoeuvre to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon.

Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, young Tavi struggles with his lack of fury crafting. At 15, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, his world will change.

Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave. But Amara is actually a spy, seeking intelligence on possible Marat traitors to the Crown. And when the Valley erupts into chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi invaluable. His talents will outweigh any fury-born power - and could even turn the tides of war.

An old love

Put my nose in this 8 years ago. was good to hear it this time. The struggles of a boy that is abnormal in a world where having crafting is the norm. His victories and defeats, how he overcomes his own mind

Love it!

Great story with multiple threads and I was never hanging out or bored for one characters story line more than the other. All fantastic and the way they came together. Absolute perfection!

Love this book

Story is great. Love it.
Editing did skip a few times. Not enough to ruin the story.

Another great book from Jim Butcher

Being a huge fan of The Dresden files I was not sure if I would enjoy this as much but to my delight I found it to be excellent. Kate Reading is brilliant!

Binge worthy!

Good story and well narrated. Editing seems to skip a little, though doesn't take away from the performance.

What a treat to find new Jim Butcher books

Well that was fun! I think I got through it in record time. Didn't want to put it down. Good yarn in a new world.

Most excellent story

Very enjoyable fantasy story with plenty of dry humor mixed in, plus excellent banter between characters. Only issue is the file skipped periodically, could be my device or the app needs and update. But overall excellent and enjoyable.

Not bad.

I have been holding off on reading these. I love Dresden Files but I see the shortcomings of the author. Calderon has the same shortcomings (repeated descriptions, too many adjectives, infuriating character motivations) but without the wonderful Harry Dresden.

That being said, it was a fun read. I am interested in seeing where it goes next.

But: The rape scene was insanely unnecessary. Butcher doesn’t write well enough to pull it off and it didn’t have any meaning to the story overall.

And: the audio editing was dismal! So many bad cuts taking me out of the story.
