Story
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs - once thought of almost as gods - were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Publisher's Summary
Tom Badgerlock has been living peaceably in the manor house at Withywoods with his beloved wife Molly these many years, the estate a reward to his family for loyal service to the crown.
But behind the facade of respectable middle-age lies a turbulent and violent past. For Tom Badgerlock is actually FitzChivalry Farseer, bastard scion of the Farseer line, convicted user of Beast-magic, and assassin. A man who has risked much for his king and lost more…
On a shelf in his den sits a triptych carved in memory stone of a man, a wolf and a fool. Once, these three were inseparable friends: Fitz, Nighteyes and the Fool. But one is long dead, and one long-missing.
Then one Winterfest night a messenger arrives to seek out Fitz, but mysteriously disappears, leaving nothing but a blood-trail. What was the message? Who was the sender? And what has happened to the messenger?
Suddenly Fitz's violent old life erupts into the peace of his new world, and nothing and no one is safe.

Highly recommended!
Fantastic book, would recommended to anyone. however, even though it's book 1, felt as though you're reading the story from the middle. That being said, easy to follow and the narrators where lively, well spoken.

Great story. Mediocre reading
Story was fantastic but the readers really emphasised some sentences incorrectly which detracted from the reading. Would still listen again simply for the story.

Worst narrator
While I love robin hobb, I can’t enjoy this with such sub par narrating. Really disappointing considering the previous books I’ve listened too have been told amazingly

Total waste of money and time
I can not see any redeeming features of this book. Remarkably boring, apart from some pointless “magic” it’s just an old man prattling on about his far to many feelings. And the narration sound like it’s done by a primary school teacher reading a children’s story, who constantly misreads the emotion conveyed in whatever sentence he’s reading. it’s as if he just gambles on happy, angry or sad

Great Story
Another great story from Robin Hobb that is let down by the selection of the narrator/s. The male narrator is good but the female narrator’s voice for Bee sounds like a breathless baby.

Hobb knows how to make it hurt
Beautiful introduction to the finale of the realm of Elderlings. After the Rain Wild Chroniclesc, we’re back with out our beloved Fitz, and Hobb is already making us choke to hold back tears.
So moving, great character depth, beautiful relationship formations. Hobb takes her time, but uses it well and the result is a beautifully crafted and deep character. Some may find it lengthy but I see the importance of all she write, each detail is a clue and a key part of a character’s development.
I’ll never get over her beautiful writing.
Well done.

An interesting entry in the Realm of the Elderlings
A very interesting novel. It really takes the time to establish Fitz’ life as an old man and to develop some new characters. The final third of the novel is gripping and will have you primed for the next book.
Narration oscillated between OK and good.
