Publisher's Summary

A wonderfully surprising, inventive and deeply moving riff on fact and fiction, history and imagination from one of New Zealand's finest and most memorable storytellers. There has never been a New Zealand novel quite like The Parihaka Woman.

Richly imaginative and original, weaving together fact and fiction, it sets the remarkable story of Erenora against the historical background of the turbulent and compelling events that occurred in Parihaka during the 1870s and 1880s. Parihaka is the place Erenora calls home, a peaceful Taranaki settlement overcome by war and land confiscation.

As her world is threatened, Erenora must find within herself the strength, courage and ingenuity to protect those whom she loves. And, like a Shakespearean heroine, she must change herself before she can take up her greatest challenge and save her exiled husband, Horitana.

Awesome read

This is a great story so very well narrated by Shavaughn Ruakere and Jim Moriarty. Made me think a lot about how much potential for harm and good individuals have.

A must read for all Pāheka

I loved this book and feel sad it has ended. I will miss Erenora and her braveness - what an amazing wahine.

I’ve been educated in Aotearoa through a time period when our true history was not told. Whilst not non-fiction The Parihaka Woman is written with such aroha and attention to ensure factual relevance to the diaries and historical events.

Despite the violent and inhumane history it tells, it is such an important story of the injustice and inequality of Māori, Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa.

This year, 2022, is the first year that the true history of Aotearoa will be taught in kura/schools. With this I hope the next generation of Pākeha will gain the knowledge and insight to past injustices because it is only through knowledge and understanding that we can truly move forward. For those of us not educated in this way - books like The Parihaka Woman are invaluable. I love seeing the strong wāhine of Aotearoa become public knowledge especially Māori wāhine.

Tēnā koutou to all involved in this beautiful book.

Every New Zealander should hear this story..

What a wonderful story. So good to hear the Maori voice of such an iconic event in NZ history. Every New Zealander should hear this story in order to give context to Maori grievances of the past. The injustice of the colonial powers of the day are laid bare.

Simply Brilliant

A remarkable tale, grounded firmly in the history that is Parihaka and the Taranaki land wars. My ancestors from Kawhia (Hikairo) supported their Taranaki whanaunga in their battles against the colonial forces. Nei ra te mihi kia koutou nga Morehu, rire rire hau, paimarire!

A superbly written tale by Witi Ihimaera matched by equally stunning performances by Jim Moriarty and Shavaughn Ruakere.

This is a 50 star book.

Mānā wāhine

Loved every chapter every word! reminded me of my Great father, as where he was from. Although I follow down my Grandmothers side Tainui. After listening to this story I feel a connection to Taranaki and the white feather. 😌

Just gets better

A spectacular confluence of history, memoir and narrative that gains momentum with every chapter. By the final act it was impossible to disengage. A must read for every New Zealander.
