Story
Summer sun, chilled, white wine, and a gorgeous fiancé. Nothing could upset pure bliss ... Right? Emmy Jamieson loves her new life in the gentle hills and sunflowers of the lush French countryside, managing La Cour des Roses, a beautiful, white stone guesthouse. With marriage to caramel-eyed Alain just round the corner, things couldn’t be more perfect. The odd glass (gallon) of wine dulls the sound of Emmy’s mum in full motherzilla-of-the-bride mode, and the faint tinkling of alarm bells coming from Alain’s ex are definitely nothing to worry about.

Story
Claudia thought she knew how this summer was going to go. Turns out, she didn’t have a clue... It’s been two years since Claudia arrived on the beautifully rugged Cornish coast with nothing but a suitcase to her name. She’d walked out on the husband who had never loved her, ditched the corporate job she’d never wanted and vowed that no gym membership card would come within ten feet of her ever again. Swapping boardrooms and cocktails for a little shop right at the end of the beach road should have been a bit of a shock.

Story
When Brid Harcus is sent to the Orkney Islands, in the far reaches of Scotland, she has high hopes for her trip being short, straightforward and lucrative. Her mother has inherited a cottage from her Great Aunt Jennet which has been unlived in and unloved for decades, and the time has come to make it habitable and saleable. Easy, right? But Midness Cottage has other ideas. For one thing it’s rather more ‘fixer upper’ than Country Living. And Brid definitely hadn’t planned for the strongly held local belief that the cottage is meant to be the home of the Orkney Witch.

A well read story that failed to take flight.
- By Carron on 11-07-2023
Publisher's Summary
Sun, croissants, and fine wine. Nothing can spoil the perfect holiday. Or can it?
When Emmy Jamieson arrives at La Cour des Roses, a beautiful guesthouse in the French countryside, she can't wait to spend two weeks relaxing with boyfriend Nathan. Their relationship needs a little TLC, and Emmy is certain this holiday will do the trick. But they've barely unpacked before he scarpers with Gloria, the guesthouse owner's cougar wife. Rupert, the ailing guesthouse owner, is shell-shocked.
Feeling somewhat responsible - and rather generous after a bottle (or so) of wine - heartbroken Emmy offers to help. Changing sheets in the gîtes will help keep her mind off her misery. Thrust into the heart of the local community, Emmy suddenly finds herself surrounded by new friends. And with sizzling hot gardener Ryan and infuriating (if gorgeous) accountant Alain providing welcome distractions, Nathan is fast becoming a distant memory.
Fresh coffee and croissants for breakfast, feeding the hens in the warm evening light, Emmy starts to feel quite at home. But it would be madness to walk away from her friends, her family, and everything she's ever worked for to take a chance on a place she fell for on holiday - wouldn't it?
Fans of Jenny Colgan, Lucy Diamond, and Nick Alexander will want to join Emmy for a glass of wine as the sun sets on the terrace at La Cour des Roses.

An evocative fun holiday read
Travelling along with EMI as she falls into helping run a French guesthouse for an outgoing, irascible Englishman who along with EMI, has been abandoned by his partner, is a joy.
The setting, the action and the characters kept me engrossed.
A delightful read.

Disappointing and tiring
I wanted to like this book, however unfortunately the first few chapters wore me out. For the first five chapters the story hashed over Emmy's anger, confusion and tears and it was still on and off by chapter 11. It may have gotten better after that, but the receptiveness of the drama got to me. I wish Emmy was a stronger, more resilient character who didnt consider (for the first five chapters) taking back her cheating boyfriend. Who does that? Sorry to say, I have returned this book.

I just can't finish this book
I've attempted to listen to this twice. the first time I stopped because who catches their boyfriend having sex with someone else and wants to talk about it, doesn't pack up and leave or doesn't think the relationship is over then and there. The second time was not only did she stay but starts cleaning up a place she has been in for 1 night and when the accountant arrives she starts questioning his business. what business is it of hers? she doesn't know these people, it was just bazaar and those things made me dislike the lead character immensely so I have been unable to continue. Disappointing because the synopsis sounded appealing.
