Publisher's Summary

Born in the US and reared in Mexico, Harrison Shepherd is a liability to his social-climbing mother, Salome. When a violent incident sends him to North Carolina, he remakes himself in America's hopeful image. But political winds continue to throw him between north and south, in a plot that turns many times on the unspeakable breach - the lacuna - between truth and public presumption.

When public ignorance, anger and fear prevail...

Here's the story of the paranoid McCarthyite 1950s. Another gripping prodigious research effort by Kingsolver.

Loved the locations and the characters.

I loved this story. I was fascinated by the lives of the non-fictional characters. I learnt a bit of history whilst being entertained by the author’s brilliant imagination. I thought Kingsolver did a great job of narrating several different characters and accents. Would listen to it again. 👌🏼

Beautifully read, excellent story. The poetry was laid on a little thick for my liking, but i can appreciate it is a masterpiece
