Publisher's Summary

The best-selling author of My Sister's Keeper and The Tenth Circle, Jodi Picoult pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens - until the day its complacency is shattered by an act of violence. Josie Cormier, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes - or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show, destroying the closest of friendships and families.

Great Read

Really goes into the minds and motives of the characters. I couldn't put it down.

Clever reveals, rich characters

I went in blind with this one based on a recommendation (my favourite way to read a book) and damn... The character development and the way important things are revealed is clever and manipulative, as it should be.

I suspect this would hit very differently for people who live in the US, but I've also read a lot of non-fiction, listened to podcasts and watched documentaries on this subject. I honestly feel Australia has been heading for the same destination until our Port Arthur Massacre.

The horror in this lies in the realism, the fallout of the shooting, the way people's true colours show as the truths come out.

Highly recommended

Jodie does it again!

Another story that hooks you in, wrenches at your heart but keeps your interest right to the end. Bullying really is a PTSD trauma that unless you have experienced it firsthand, you can never truly understand or appreciate the repercussions.
If you continue through life worrying about others opinions, you invalidate your own. I think this book really demonstrates that. Well done! An excellent read.

Great book, narration is a let down.

I thoroughly enjoy this book, having read it through multiple times years ago, I am now listening on audible due to being time poor. The story is incredible, thought provoking and complex, especially in todays climate. However, I have found the narration to be a let down. The narrator putting on the same strange, gruff tone whenever speaking as one of the make characters is very off putting and removes you from the immersive experience. I found their tone for certain dialogue to be unsuitable for the conversations. I wish it had been narrated better as it is such a great story overall.

Searing Slice of School Bullying

Picoult writes very relatable characters, in this close up story of a school shooting.
