Publisher's Summary

Five long years have passed since the annihilation of three Roman legions in the wilds of Germania. Varus, the general who led the ill-fated army, is long dead, and the bones of his 15,000 legionaries moulder in the forests. But not all the Romans were slain in the ambush. Centurion Tullus, a seasoned veteran, survived, and now he lives for revenge upon the tribal chieftain Arminius, who masterminded the ambush. Tullus will stop at nothing to kill his bitterest enemy or to recover his legion's lost Eagle.

At first, fortune seems to be with the Romans. Germanicus, the general appointed to lead punitive campaigns against the tribes, is resourceful and courageous. His armies are vast, dwarfing those of the enemy, and the initial clashes are won by the legions. Yet Arminius is far from defeated. Charismatic and determined, he gathers together thousands of warriors for a second time. Their purpose is to visit death and destruction upon Rome's legions, to repeat what was done five years before. Stalking Germanicus' forces day and night, they watch and wait for the perfect moment to strike.

Can Tullus prevent another disaster? And will he ever recover his legion's Eagle?

Too much of the same

It was a repeat of the last part of the trilogy; too much fighting and less about people than I would have liked.

Great yarn and very well delivered. Thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to the rest of the series.

highly enjoyable

i made what I thought was a mistake by listening to the 3rd book first but when i realised the mistake and listened to the first 2 it actually made them more enjoyable. David's voice is hypnotic and very easy to listen to. I did even shed a few tears in a few places on both sides of the story.

Another truly stunning book!

I thought I knew a good book. I thought I knew in depth, relatable characters. I thought I knew Roman books and what they did for me. Wow, this series has opened me eyes! Like a child being introduced to tomato sauce for the first time I am astounded and need more! Having read all of Simon Scarrow and Anthony Riches (if you haven’t may I highly recommend) I didn’t think anything could come close.

I was wrong.

This book, and the previous entry in the series, has made me more engaged and hanging on the truly perfect delivery of every narrated word like few others ever. My only disappointment as I go into the third instalment is the knowledge it will be the last book. Woh is me haha.

If I could rate it higher I would. Prepare yourself and set up a ‘do not disturb’ sign. This is epic!
