Story
At the very end of the Ladies’ Frocks Departments, past Cocktail Frocks, there was something very special, something quite, quite wonderful; but it wasn’t for everybody: that was the point. Because there, at the very end, there was a lovely arch, on which was written in curly letters Model Gowns. Written by a superb novelist of contemporary manners, Ladies in Black is a fairytale which illuminates the extraordinariness of ordinary lives. The women in black are run off their feet, what with the Christmas rush and the summer sales that follow.

Story
At the school gate, when she accidentally kissed one new friend on the nose and called another a "beautiful man-horse", Rachael realized that small-town France could hardly be more different to Australia. The smell of cigarettes replaced the tang of bone-broth and sprouted sourdough, the neighbors sometimes came to blows and under no circumstances would anyone wear active wear in public. Muddling through in terrible French pushed Rachael's family to their limits. Some days, everybody cried and ate their feelings with croissants. But the town of Sommières embraced these ragtag Australians.

Just not my cup of tea….
- By Iwbar on 23-03-2024
Publisher's Summary
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca.
This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.
At the centre of it all is Gordon, a retired widower, who just wants a bit of peace and quiet. Deadly Kerfuffle is a smart, riveting and incredibly funny novel inspired by actual letters to the editor in a local newspaper. Through biting satire and a cast of unforgettable characters, it’s an insight into the kind of paranoia that could only ever blossom in the quietest and safest of places.

Top comedy/thriller
Tony Martin is one of the funniest buggers around; anything by him is guaranteed comedy gold. But Deadly Kerfuffle works great as a thriller as well. Tony works in plenty of great humour but never at the expense of the story. It's full of great characters that you wouldn't expect in a thriller. Great fun.
Mike Bishop does a great job with the reading; delivers the jokes and twists punchily and gives the characters life.

An eccentric story plot, comedy/espionage .
Off kilter story of tinfoil hat wearing residents, arson, vendettas and obscure theories against the oppressed.
However the narrative should have been done by the author, as he has quite the ability of character voices and and array of pots and pans to have made this a great audible adventure, that Tony Martin and Mr Pots&Pans fans would have appreciated .

Enjoyed the eccentric characters in this story. Wasn't helped by the performance. I reckon Tony Martin could've done a better job with narration.
