A Good Book!

This book draws your attention to the reasons so many school shootings occur in the US.
Bullying & isolating other students can have shocking consequences for all concerned.
It was a good book but I didn't particularly like the narration . It was totally over done. Sometimes it's best for the listener to put their own expression into the narration.

Never assume

Having enjoyed the film for decades I thought I'd give it a whirl. I had assumed that the film was a fairly faithful adaptation of the book.

I was pleasantly surprised. It is easy to see how it launched King's career.

A Telekinetic Teen Thriller from the Maestro of Horror

This is a solid debut novel from a man who would go on to create some truly beloved epics (The Shining, The Stand & the Dark Tower series just to name a few). The premise is fairly simple & straightforward - it centres around an awkward young girl named Carrie White who is mercilessly bullied by her classmates & has an insanely religious wannabe-zealot of a mother. She also harbours the secret power of telekinesis & after a High School prank gone wrong she uses it to wreak havoc on all those who have humiliated her.

Stephen King crafts suspense like no other & the way he presents this story in the form of newspaper clippings & excerpts from books & documents is actually quite brilliant. King masterfully captures High School bullying that is just as relevant today as it undoubtedly was back when the book was published.

Some of the characterisation of characters like Billy Nolan & Chris Hargensen is brilliantly realised & they are more complex than one might consider at first glance. Carrie White herself is presented as a victim & no doubt she was but she was a product of a horrible upbringing by a truly unstable mother & I think it a mischaracterisation to consider that she goes insane in the book’s final act. I believe she was psychopathic & King I think gives enough hints throughout to suggest that that is the case.

All in all I think it is a fine cautionary tale in the dangers of bullying which is all too prevalent in our society.

I liked the story but damn do I wish it was Will Patton who had narrated this one. sissys voice does not suit this style of writing and I found her to he incoherent at times with pace and tone. overall great tho

A blueprint for later King epics such as the stand

kings first hit novel, as a lover of his other work this is a great book to see him demonstrating his skills and talents so early on. I also feel it's one of the only books I've read of his which try to explain the monsters

She does a great job

The narrator does an amazing job. You flow with the bok, you feel what Carrie feels. Always a treat to have a Stephen King book read with skill.

Stephen King is amazing

I am steadily working my way through all Stephen King's books since listening to IT. As a heavy fiction reader, I can't believe I've gone so many years without reading a Stephen King novel. This book is simply brilliant, I loved it.

Don’t be afraid

Definitely worth a listen if you want to know the story before the movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s definitely not as scary as it’s hyped to be.

I am currently aiming to listen to all King’s books, and although I have already heard a few I’ve gone back to the start with Carrie. It’s a treasure to hear it read by Sissy Spacek who played Carrie in the original movie. The story is solid and addresses many of the trials and tribulations faced by the teenage Carrie in her coming of age and employing her telekinesis.
