Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2017

Andre Aciman's critically acclaimed novel may finally be stepping into modern classic status, having recently emerged from relative obscurity due to the upcoming movie release starring Armie Hammer. And its place in the literary canon is well deserved, depicting perfectly the infatuated experience of first love (I won't say "feeling" because the picture Aciman paints is not a singular "thing" - it's very much a journey through obsession). The story is beautiful, erotic, and feels firmly rooted in human truths (and will make you blush). But what makes it truly worthy of listening to - and why it's my pick for October - is THAT voice. Armie Hammer's narration is among the best I've ever experienced. —Emily, Audible Editor

Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy. André Aciman's critically acclaimed debut novel is a frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human passion.

More praise for Call Me By Your Name:

"Hammer’s soft, velvety voice lends itself perfectly to the story and its Italian setting. While you might think this one isn’t worth a listen if you’ve already seen the movie or read the book, many reviewers say it is still worth taking in even if you know the story - some even say it’s worth listening to more than once." Sexy, sensual and beautiful

This book is so intimate and evocative I took to only listening to it when I was alone. Armie Hammer reads it beautifully and the descriptions of young love, Italy and summer are simply stunning. This book will hopefully make you remember your first intense love and the breathtaking beauty of intellect and acceptance.
A wonderful book for the open-minded.

It gets better

The start of this book is interminable, repetitive and juvenile but not in the evocative way I hoped. The only thing that pulled me through was Armie Hammer’s voice! I’m glad I stuck with it because about half way though it becomes quite beautiful. It’s also very pretentious, but this doesn’t make it inaccessible, just occasionally very cringey. Glad I listened rather than read it or I probably wouldn’t have pushed through.

Lush

I have read this book in its physical form and on first reading was slightly shocked at certain sections (you know the ones). Listening to this gave me a much better understanding of the characters and the story and the parts that had shocked me became tender and beautiful in Armie Hammer's reading. The man has a voice of silk.

This is an excellent story for anyone who likes to understand how people pine for others; how situations can be read many ways; and how every moment bleeds importance when you are young and everything seems just out of your reach.

Always beautiful

Whether I read this book, or listen to it being read, it doesn't diminish the beauty that this novel is. Armie Hammer's voice is so soothing, and really suits. Definitely worth purchasing with a credit, and is certainly the type of book to fall asleep to, and come back to time and time again.
