What the Critics Say

"Berry shows us the psychic costs of misplaced family pride and social rigidity, and yet he also celebrates the benevolent blessing of familial love. This is simple, soul-satisfying storytelling, augmented by understated humor and quiet insight." (Publishers Weekly)

Thoroughly beautiful

I liked the southern accent of the narrator, it suited the pace of the author. The sort of book that can only be a book because it is too beautiful and imagined to be anything but a story told to another. I felt like I was there despite growing up in Australia and never having been to the southern American states.
