Publisher's Summary

A tour-de-force of historical imagination, this is the story of three young men at the dawn of the French Revolution. Georges-Jacques Danton: zealous, energetic, debt-ridden. Maximilien Robespierre: small, diligent, and terrified of violence. And Camille Desmoulins: a genius of rhetoric, charming, handsome, but erratic and untrustworthy.

As these key figures of the French Revolution taste the addictive delights of power, they must also come to face the horror that follows.

Too Long

I loved Mantel's Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies so I was keen to see what she would do with the French Revolution. Unfortunately I never found out the ending it is just way way too long.

The French Revolution.

Absolutely loved this book , an extraordinary account of a deeply disturbing time in French History. Narrator was excellent . Brilliant writing by the late Hilary Mantel, I was to start again and savour the exquisite writing.

extraordinary and captivating

Too long? No, I never wanted it to end. Brilliantly executed and expertly narrated, it provided an incredibly detailed and rich narrative of how it may have been. Hilary Mantel’s work is second to none

An extraordinary account of the French Revolution

Violence, terror, and everything but safety. A first hand account of life among the proponents and protagonists of la revolution. It’s like being there. A fabulous, tragic, and often very funny, story. With an incredible performance by Jonathan Keeble who inhabits every character masterfully.
