Publisher's Summary

'I have broken my vows. I have murdered innocents. I have trod down the soil over their dead face with my bare heels, and only the moon as witness. I have loved a woman and she ruined me. I have loved a king and yet I ruined him.'

The year is 937. England is a nation divided, ruled by minor kings and Viking lords. Each vies for land and power. The Wessex king Æthelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, is readying himself to throw a spear into the north. Behind him stands Dunstan, the man who will control the destiny of the next seven kings of England and the fate of an entire nation. Welcome to the original game for the English throne.

Historical Fantasy

I've read (and listened to) several books by Con Iggulden and I've enjoyed all of them. That's the reason I purchased Dunstan. Unfortunately this book isn't very good. It's supposed to be historical fiction but it's more like historical fantasy. It's awful and I couldn't finish it (I tried twice). I expected better from this author.

Very entertaining.

Have listened to a number of the authors books which are usually very good in the historical fiction genre. Although, can’t say lord of the bow series was of the same quality. This one I think is one of his best. Good narration, sensational characters.

A sweeping story of an extraordinary life

The story of an extraordinary man, with unusual talents. The book anchors around historical fact, but fills in the details where they are not recorded. I appreciate how the author captures the characters and attitudes of a relatively little understood period. While the story takes its time, it is well worth listening to this gripping saga, if you have the time.

Can Conn do no wrong

Even when I’m struggle to find something to listen to I only have to find something from Conn and I’m set.

Dunstan is a great story about a remarkable man in a remarkable time. Conn is able to build a character that is both extraordinary and yet deeply flawed but completely loveable, shaping his story around the destiny of England.

Definitely worth a read.

Couldnt finish it.

First half great, then boring for me. The author is a favourite of mine, but not this time.

Excellent performance and enthralling book.

A fascinating tale. Really well researched and retold. Narrator's style was perfect, he bought Dunstan alive.

Fascinating story and wonderful narration

Knew nothing of this era, but the story was so interesting and I just wanted to keep listening. Later I found myself researching more about that time and will look for more stories of the era.

The narration was fabulous and faultless for me. I went on to look for other books by the same narrator - and by the same author.

Highly recommend.
