Publisher's Summary

A charming, honest, funny, sad, tender and beautiful literary memoir, from Tim Rogers of You Am I. Think Patti Smith meet Dylan Thomas, by way of Banjo Paterson.

"Rogers is a beautiful writer, both literate and lyrical ... Detours makes most rock memoirs look like How to Hypnotise Chooks. A heartbreaking work of staggering honesty." West Australian

"Of all the utterances delivered to me by strangers, my least favourite after 'We can no longer legally serve you' would have to be, 'Well, that isn't very rock'n'roll.'"

Tim Rogers of You Am I has always been a complicated man: a hard-drinking musician with the soul of a poet; a flamboyant flâneur; a raconteur, a romantic and a raffish ne'er-do-well. In this offbeat, endearing memoir, Tim walks us through years jam-packed with love, shame, joy, enthusiasms, regrets, fights, family—and music, always music.

A work of real grace and tenderness, Detours is often impossibly sad and beautiful—but also full of wit, wordplay and punching jolts of larrikin energy to make you laugh out loud.

"A beautiful writer, Tim Rogers takes you where you want to go." Robert Forster

Critic Reviews

"Rogers is a beautiful memoirist...[Detours is] an authentic, beautiful, unusual - and yes, brave - book that stands up on its own as a strong work of literature." (The Guardian)

"The good news is that our Tim can write. Every sentence trails a floaty scarf. A few of them have a floppy hat over one eye." (Don Walker)

"Artfully written and reflective...descriptive, insightful and anecdote-rich." (Herald Sun)

interesting insights into the man behind the music

As a long time Tim Rogers and You Am I found this was quite an eye opener for me especially in terms of his openness about his mental health and perceived personal flaws and relationship challenges. A really interesting listen.

Balderdash and poppycock

I don’t know Tim Rogers and I may not particularly like Tim Rogers as a character, and damnit do I not respect him either. That being said, I must say that his book, apocryphal though some of it may be, is indeed quite interesting, well written, and full of pathos. So I recommend it to anyone. That being said, if any of it sounds to you like a good time or a bright idea, I’d urge you to instead pick up something by a Jocko Willink or a David Goggins type. Let us learn from the mistakes of others, not repeat them. Six out of five stars!

Unique

I enjoyed it. I can't help but wonder if the audio version is much different to the published copy as some of the best parts are as a result of the narration, impersonations, and emphasis on certain words which may not come across in print form. Very raw, some laugh out loud moments, and some sections where he just chatters away about not much (eg, the 5 minutes spent talking about the 2 flies on the back of the Sri Lankan batsman!)

I've long been a Tim Rogers/You am I fan and it was great to get an insight into the showman I've seen perform live on many occasions. Unsurprisingly, it's not like any other book I've ever read.

Unexpectedly moving

I got this book as something light hearted to enjoy anecdotes and pass some time. Not a You Am I diehard and only really adore a handful of their songs (listen to Manliness if you haven’t). Thought id need a dictionary to understand a vocabulary I’m jealous of not having, nor entirely understand. Then I’m floored by the honesty, reflections, sense of connection to the character of people, place, references and humour. Felt like I learned some things about life I didn’t ask for, but am thankful for. Authenticity is a beautiful thing. Better and worse. Game of footy and cricket followed by beers and a laugh on offer anytime. You’re a ripper Tim.

Great listen

He reads this very well. It's a comedic, self effacing, honest look at the difficulties he has faced and an insight to his free spirit. He's an intriguing personality and we need more of those. Very entertaining and thought provoking.

A great example of self-narrated autobiography

Being a You Am I fan, I was always going to love this book (and I did), but what made it far more enjoyable than I had imagined was Tim Rogers' delivery. I've recently listened to another Aussie rock icon's self-narrated autobiography, and was disappointed that - at times - the author was essentially just reading from the page as if it was a year 7 book report. No so with Tim Rogers. Here, Tim's inflection, pauses and overall poetic reading style brought the stories to life. This is a craft in itself, and I'd love to see Tim lending his voice to other written works.

The mock phone conversation between Tim and his Mum was brilliant and hilarious; his frank discussion about his relationship with his daughter was just beautiful; and the affection for which he speaks of his bandmates, family and friends shows a side of him that we might miss if we only focus on the swaggering, screaming, spitting, on-stage version of this gentle soul.

I've had opportunities to meet Tim a handful of times, and in each instance my shyness let me down. After reading this book, I might not waste any future chances. I reckon we'd get along pretty good.

The name says it all

Tim Rogers, what an amazing man. To hear the honesty he speaks of and the way he recounts his words so articulately makes me smile. Such a great musician, now a great author.

a beautiful mix of prose, elements of James Joyce's Ulysses, Tim Wintons Australiana and hunter s thompsons honesty. a wonderful biography.

Man bears his chest , Bear chests his man

A beautiful telling of a man’s life in search of himself and the perfect song
So much heart and honesty in this , so much sincerity and longing in his voice
So many lessons to share , to err on the side of kindness is probably one we can all learn
And where the best place to drop an F#min is
