Captain Lacey Shows his metal again.

I absolutely love this series of books, set in Regency England and featuring the saviour of the weak and downtrodden, Captain Gabriel Lacey, an ex-cavalry officer, badly injured and sent home.

Living on half pay, Gabriel lives in genteel poverty and to keep himself busy, he helps people with their problems. Naturally, there problems become his problems and with increasing frequency, our hero finds himself in danger.

Along the way Gabriel earns the friendship and trust of several people from the highest echelons of society, most notably Lucius Grenville and the Viscountess Donata Breckenridge. He is also caught in a battle of wills with the notorious crime boss, James Denis., who tries he hardest to bring Lacey into his stable of useful individuals and therefore under his complete control, but Lacey is determined to remain his own man, answerable only to himself.

The Thames River Murders is the tenth book in the series and rack and everyone is a gem. The books are bought to incredible life by the brilliant and versatile narration of James Gillies. I would have to consider him one of my top three male narrators, along with Simon Prebble and Michael Page. His repertoire of accents are brilliantly performed, extensive and second to none in my opinion.

I am not going to give away the plot, but if you have not entered the often murky, but always exciting world of the chivalrous Captain Lacey, I suggest you start with book 1, the Hanover Square Affair. You really need to start at the beginning to follow the development of characters and relationships throughout the series.

A resounding 5 stars across the board.
