Publisher's Summary

Jaxie dreads going home. His mum’s dead. The old man bashes him without mercy, and he wishes he was an orphan. And then, in one terrible moment, his life is stripped to little more than what he can carry and how he can keep himself alive.

There’s just one person left in the world who understands him and what he still dares to hope for. But to reach her he’ll have to cross the vast saltlands on a trek that only a dreamer or a fugitive would attempt.

Damage and land.

What made the experience of listening to The Shepherd's Hut the most enjoyable?

The landscape comes to life through his language... I feel it see it and the vision of the salt lakes was extraordinary. How does Tim Winton know about characters who are so damaged and yet somehow you care what happens to them. Brilliant

What did you like best about this story?

I love Time Winton's style... his images are so rooted in the experiences of his characters and their words ring so true to them.

What does Kate Mulvany bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I found her narration of both characters perfect and her accent for the hermit wonderful. Actually I was almost brought to tears for both...

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

NA

brilliant dialouge bought to life by Kate

Tim Winton frequently captures the gritty beauty of WA. This book is no exception with vivid descriptions of country that really paint the landscape. Makes easy and enjoyable to imagine. Great occurisms all through it too.

Tim Winton at his very best!

Great tale of quintessential Australian characters thrown together in adversity. A compelling story set deep in the bush.

Tim Winton always crafts an intriguing story.

Superbly written. Excellent narrator. Not too long. I enjoyed it very much and will still out other audio books by the same author.

Loved it, loads of description to carry you away into the story.

Only thing that confuses me is why did they choose a female narrator for a teenage boy?
Kinda made it more difficult to follow than was needed.

Good Yarn

I loved this book because after doing a road trip in Australia past the Salt lakes I felt I could visualise the books setting and characters well. Quite a believable story with a nice touch of humour. Enough suspence, surprise, adventure to keep you engaged in the story throughout.

Loved it

So happy I chose to listen to this rather than read it. Kate Mulveney’s voice was perfect for both characters and the most excellent story.
