Publisher's Summary

Gower Street, London, 1882: Sidney Grice, London's most famous personal detective, is expecting a visitor. He drains his fifth pot of morning tea, and glances outside, where a young, plain woman picks her way between the piles of horse-dung towards his front door. Sidney Grice shudders. For heaven's sake - she is wearing brown shoes. The Mangle Street Murders is for those who like their crime original, atmospheric, and very, very funny.

What the Critics Say

"One of the most delightful and original new novels of the year, this is the first in a series that could well become a cult. Grice and Middleton promise to become a positive treat. Catch them now." ( Daily Mail)

A circumstantial mystery.

A good mystery, if a little over complicated at times. Sydney Grice was a very difficult character to get through, with little to no redeeming qualities. Were it not for March's narrative, I would not have made it through. Curious to see if the series is more forgiving of the female sex, but not sure I would want to jump straight into the sequel if it continues in the manner of book one.

Three stars because it ticks the boxes for the genre, and I did enjoy the mystery, but the ending and characters were weak - succeeding purely due to a fortunate coincidence of an untimely accident.

Sherlock Holmesy fun

Emma Gregory is an excellent narrator. Story was not what I expected - more off the wall and quirky. Good fun.
