Unrealistic, boring, and a bit offensive

What did you like best about The Girl from Krakow? What did you like least?

I liked the blurb best. I liked the unrealistic and constant deus ex machinas least.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

This is a fascinating period in history, and in Poland's history particularly. Books about how civilians lived during this time, and how Jews managed to hide, are full of incredible stories and are well worth reading. Unfortunately, even with this location, timeframe, and the multitude of interesting real stories from which to work, Alex Rosenberg has managed to write a boring, shallow, unrealistic, and often embarrassing story.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

For the utter incredulity of it, the scene towards the end of the book where a situation with no possible positive outcome for Rita and her friend Danielle is reversed by a policeman at the very last moment. Completely unlikely, this scene caused me to roll my eyes at its absurdity.

Michael Page did an admirable job narrating this story.

An epic journey of survival in WWII

Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl from Krakow to be better than the print version?

Possibly.

What did you like best about this story?

The historical details intertwined in the story of Rita's survival were interesting and I have read enough about WWII to know they would not be exaggerated

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I found it hard to get into the story as I was distracted by the reader's harsh voice. As the story gained more importance than the reader I was able to engage better - the different accents were I thought good.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both, I was very engaged and was emotionally invested in Rita's journey of survival.

Any additional comments?

Initially I did not know wether the author was a man or a woman and guessed (correctly) the sex scenes were written by a man especially as later scenes seemed just wrong - so male - I think they should be rewritten as the protagonist is a women and a woman's interpretation is needed - brave try but off key. Also they were probably a bit clumsy and did not need to be so graphic - I am no prude but given the rest of the story were a bit out of place - I think the author was trying to inject that side of humanity which is often missing in these stories of war, and which should be included as an important part of the human condition.

Absolutely marvellous. Unbelievable, yet believable.

Miracles do happen. Despite the cynicism of this modern Godless, secular world. One must never forget mans inhumanity to man. One should never forget what happened during the 2nd World War by so called civilised peoples. Saying that I am Godless and secular. Having never experienced war I cannot imagine the horrors; I am grateful that I haven't. This book is not fiction.

what an amazing book. so complete in it's ability to capture the reader. excellent narrator.

Fabulous story about families torn apart and reunited after the holocaust. Surely based on real situations. Well told.

'Nipples hardened'

That should be the title of this book,because that phrase was used so many times throughout this 20hr audiobook.
Disappointing - I was going to abandon this audiobook, but 16hrs in, I had invested too much time for me to not know the ending (I spent ages trawling online to find a summary of this book so that I didn't have to finish it, but alas) and so I slogged on.
Needless to say, I'm not a fan.
