Publisher's Summary

In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realises it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialised skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

Great story but too much romance interfering.

Great storyline but too much time in the romance. When you buy one of these suspense thriller stories you tend not to look for too much romance. It kept stopping the flow of the story and I got bored. Take out the boring bed scenes and this would have been awesome.

Good story with a strong female lead

I found this enjoyable - it turned traditional ideas of masculine dominance in the 'Special Ops' world on its head in a believable way

However I didn't enjoy the development of romantic relationship within this framework- seemed a little contrived and too 'Mills and Boon'

-still a fun read

Obvious

This book was selected by my book club. I love to read so don't judge me for cheating and not reading in a book club- I had spring cleaning to do= two birds, one stone.

I am so glad I did. If I had to read this, I would have been angry I wasted my time.

Although I recognised the name, I didn't associate the name Stephenie Myer with Twilight as I wasnt a fan. It was only now that I've finished the audiobook and was about to leave a review, that I noticed her other titles and I've finally twigged... that's why this book was predictable, vapid and boring!!

Note: I also hated the narration, but one needs to give the benefit of the doubt to the performer. I feel like perhaps it was the terrible writing, insipid characters and inauthentic dialogue that left me irritated. That said; her voice of the male character who I've already forgotten, not the sap- the jock, was painful.

An unexpected find

I think that Stephenie’s post Twilight books have shown her full range as an author. The characters in this book and their strange relationships with each other are both strong and crucial to a satisfying conclusion. Even the short lived characters elicit an emotional response from the reader/listener.
Both the urban and rural settings are described in such detail that you can easily visualise them. The action sequences are also easy to become part of.
The narration enabled the listener to easily discern one character from another. The pace changes depending on the situation and builds tension where needed.

Slow to start, but worth perservering

I found this book to be very slow. Lots of waffle at the beginning but it certainly got more exciting about a third of the way through. I persevered as I am a huge fan of The Host (by the same author) & thought I should give it a fair go. I am so glad I did, I really enjoyed the book. Lots of action and intrigue. The characters were really interesting. The narrator did an excellent job, it was easy to differentiate between the characters.

Unpredictable

The start of the book was a little slow, but the the story gets more and more exciting. Such a good turn to make the woman as a main character in espionage story.
