A terrorist bomb explodes during a South Korean celebration of the anniversary of the election of its first president. Alarms are raised in Washington. No one is claiming responsibility. Paul Hood, Director of the Op-Center, must answer these questions. The Op-Center, a largely autonomous new agency which takes on the government's toughest security problems, is only six months old, and has never been given a foreign crisis until now.

The best backstory
- By Amazon Customer on 30-04-2023
Publisher's Summary
President Jack Ryan faces a world crisis unlike any he has ever known. A high-level assassination attempt in Russia has the newly elected Ryan sending his most trusted eyes and ears - including antiterrorism specialist John Clark - to Moscow, for he fears the worst is yet to come. And he’s right. The attempt has left the already unstable Russia vulnerable to ambitious forces in China eager to fulfill their destiny. If they succeed, the world as we know it will never look the same. If they fail, the consequences may be unspeakable. Blending the exceptional realism and authenticity that are his hallmarks with intricate plotting, razor-sharp suspense and a remarkable cast of characters, this is Clancy at his best.

Another great title that was a blast to listen to
Since I downloaded the first Tom Clancy audio book I have binged on the series and haven’t regretted it one bit.

great storey, narration slightly let's it's down
fantastic as all the classic Clancy's, slightly let down by the narration tho.
sometimes hard to tell when a different paragraph is jumped to, inconsistent pauses and obvious recording level and voice types all throughout, as if they stopped recording halfway through a chapter or paragraph and the narrator suddenly sounds far away or in a different tone.

Phenomenal!
Well.. What not love about this book (I would actuallysay the whole trilogy with Executive orders and Debt of honour before it)
Michael Prichard delivers it brilliantly and, the story is fantastic and the ammount of technical details in equipment, vehicles and etc is impressive as usual
Jack Ryan book series means a lot to me, I've listened yo to each of the books at least twice and I don't think I'd be slowing dosn anytime soon

Russia's found it. China wants it. War is coming.
Russia has found massive gold and oil deposits. All of it is in Siberia. China has suddenly found itself in a financial crisis. The solution is based just north of the border. Within a few days march of the Russian Chinese border is oil and gold fields that are potential rivals to the best on earth. Defended by a poorly trained and equipped military. The stage is set.

ignore the old school macho vibe
Some of the attitudes to race and gender are dated (written late 90s) but that's the characters, that's Clancy, and that's the 90's. A bit cliched culturally/ geopolitically but a nicely woven multi thread story that's heaps of fun, dramatic, action packed, intriguing.

Boring narration
Great book, read it years ago. This version is however destroyed by the boooooring, single toned narration, no characterisation at all. I would return it if I could work out how.

Has not aged gracefully.
I remember the powerful effect that Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games had on me many years ago. I struggled to wade through six chapters. It may have been the prose or it may have been the horrible narration, I am not sure.
All I know is that the characters are hard to warm to, and more obviously, the technology is so outdated that the overly descriptive chapters describing the technology become monotone and dull. I loved Tom Clancy, but this was a miss.
