Publisher's Summary

Even the darkest secrets can't stay buried forever.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood.

Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children's home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. DI Kim Stone fast realizes she's on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it's too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid ,and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent. Silent Scream is the first book in the series. Watch out for Evil Games, coming soon.

Critic Reviews

"A superb debut by an assured new writer. Blending sharp wit with emotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride alongside DI Kim Stone and look forward to the next outing." (Mel Sherratt)
"I absolutely loved it!.... This one is one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, and that includes mainstream authors such as James Patterson! I would seriously put this book in the same league." ( Fiona's Book Reviews)

Who was who?

a good read that kept me guessing until the end. I did find the narrator a bit annoying. a bit hard to distinguish one character from another

Ruined

A great story, even with the cliche characters, but unfortunately ruined by the narration. Almost unlistenable but the story got me through.

Brilliant

The story has all the best elements of top crime fiction. I love the fact that there is always a twist in the tale at the end

Narration let this book down

I struggled to finish this book, once again due to the poor narration. The addition of commas would have helped a lot! It was like the whole book was read as one continuous sentence. This meant it was difficult to tell characters apart or be involved in the plot. Also, once again the narration had parts that sounded like the target audience was 4 yrs old. The sing song voice of the sociopath character in particular was really hard to listen to seriously. I'd like to rate the book higher, but I really couldn't as it was all too hard to follow dt the narration.

Groan!

I’m not sure if I really disliked this book or was completely turned off by the narrator. I usually adore books read by British narrators but Jan Cramer must have had a train to catch because she rushed to the point of leaving out punctuation, ran characters into each other and generally had a snippy judgey tone that thoroughly grated.
Perhaps I might have enjoyed this book had it been in the hands of another narrator but this book needed time in front of an editor to prune the waffle and delete the words doubled up in consecutive sentences.
I was soooooo close to sending this book back but hey, what doesn’t kill you...

A brutal story

Overall not a bad story, very grim. The narrator’s sing song voice at times drove me mad and I swiped to the of those chapters. Narrator also could have recognised a full stop.

Struck by the detail

From the start the complexity and detail of this work was striking. I must listen to this again. The author must be amazing, ai have to search out some more works.
