What the Critics Say

"Skilled investigation, happenstance and cooperation mesh through every phase of the puzzle, ushering the reader along to one satisfying conclusion." (Publishers Weekly)
"Throughout this low-key, character-driven series, Havill has managed as well as anyone in the genre to balance the particulars of cop procedure with the often unspoken emotions at the core of small-town life." (Booklist)

Narrator's pace in contrast with lead characters

Having enjoyed Rusty Nelson's interpretation of Bill Gastner and colleagues, I was unprepared for Stephanie Brush's much faster narrative delivery. Perhaps she was looking to use pace to contrast narrative with dialogue which may work for some. As I enjoy taking time over all parts of the story I found her speed tiring while I felt that some of her dialogue/ character interpretation went against the text direction, also robbing my enjoyment of what is otherwise another well written contribution to one of my favourite detective series. I've enjoyed Gastner when he's led the storyline in previous novels but I also enjoyed seeing more of Estelle, Bobby and their team as they puzzle their way through to satisfactory conclusions in this story set on both sides of the border.
