Publisher's Summary

Ian Carmichael is Lord Peter Wimsey in these consummate BBC radio dramatisations of Dorothy L Sayers' much-loved mysteries.

Elegant, erudite and sharp-witted, aristocratic detective Lord Peter Wimsey featured in numerous novels and short stories by 'Queen of Crime', Dorothy L Sayers. These full-cast adaptations – first broadcast on BBC radio between 1975 and 1981 – are loved by mystery fans all around the world.

In The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, when General Fentiman is found dead at his club, Wimsey suspects foul play. Could he have been murdered for his money?

Strong Poison introduces Harriet Vane – a crime novelist on trial for murdering her lover. Wimsey knows Harriet is no femme fatale, but an innocent victim embroiled in a diabolical plot....

Five Red Herrings sees Peter faced with six men, all of whom have a motive for killing argumentative Scottish painter Sandy Campbell. But who was the culprit?

In Have His Carcase, when Harriet Vane finds a body on the beach with his throat cut, Lord Peter must work out whether it was murder or suicide.

These classic dramas, produced by Simon Brett (author of the 'Charles Paris' series), also feature Peter Jones, Joan Hickson, Miriam Margolyes and Warren Clarke.

One of my favorite audio books

This full cast BBC radio drama series is one of my all time favourites. It is based on the books from the golden age of English crime fiction and played by a cast of great British actors.

Light but tight

These are so much fun. The Sayers stories have interesting if contrived plots populated by colorful characters. Carmichael is the perfect Lord Peter...and you have to hand it to the BBC, backing him up with such wonderful players as Peter Jones as the manservant Bunter, Gabriel Woolf as Inspector Parker and Maria Aitken as Harriet Vane. For half an hour one can join them in a long-vanished English world of privilege in which crime and injustice always follow orderly processes on the way to justice being done. Not a hair out of place, immaculate tailoring and clues that always add up. Unpretentious and light but tight, in my view; and all the better for it. These episodes have stood the test of time well (as, one notes, have the reputations of the cast members). Both the 20s and the 80s are looking good in the rear-view mirror.

Such a joy to hear old British radio dramas

I watched all the television series with both Ian Carmichael and Edward Petherbridge, so I was delighted to find these radio dramas, especially so when they covered the Harriet Vane stories. The actors have done a marvellous job to portray Sayers' subtle and complex leading characters.

great but get the sound levels right

The only issue I have with these stories is how loud the music is between segments. Loud enough to jar me awake if i happen to fall asleep litening. Loud enough to have to remove or turn down head phones. Literally everything else is great

Classic who done it.

Great to listen to good old fashioned crime stories. Would only be improved if the chapter index indicated where each play began and ended. You can work it out but it would make finding a specific story easier for the listener. This however in no substantial way affects the quality of the production.
