Publisher's Summary
When a young girl is found dead in the mountains outside Timber Creek, lifelong resident Officer Mattie Cobb and her partner, K-9 police dog Robo, are assigned to the case that has rocked the small Colorado town.
With the help of Cole Walker, a local veterinarian and single father, Mattie and Robo must track down the truth before it claims another victim. But the more Mattie investigates, the more she realizes how many secrets her town holds. And the key may be Cole's daughter, who knows more than she's saying. The murder was just the beginning, and if Mattie isn't careful, she and Robo could be next.
Suspenseful and smart, Killing Trail is an explosive debut that will have listeners clamoring for more Mattie and Robo for years to come.

good detective story. tad of romance. awesome dog
First time listening to this author and I must say. I really enjoyed following close to this. Detective story
Absolutely enjoyed Maddie and Robo as their Journey took them down a suspense track.
The little amount of romance that is blossoming was nice and this first book sets the world building scene.
So we get to know the players and we see that there is some history of sadness behind our heroin. And even the hero has some problems.
I am a military suspense type of listener. So in places I found the storyline to be a little slow. But that was mainly because the author was very meticulous about giving us clues.
I have never listened to this narrator before. And she does a good job, however, without the author's explanation of who is speaking, you probably would get confused as her voices don't really differ. When it comes to different characters.
I will look at book 2, but I worry that it may be a bit too slow for me. But all in all great detective story.

Listenable
Properly written - tick - properly read - tick - good production - tick - clear narrative - tick - not too many characters and convoluted subplots - tick
my only gripe is the 2D characters - and the gooey saccharine prose designed to make the reader go 'awww'
the love interest is an exhausted veterinarian bringing up 2 daughters by himself - of course - then there's the sarcastic dickhead male cop who can't say a single line without being a sarcastic dickhead male cop
and the heroine - well - you can almost hear the american national anthem when she starts spit-polishing her halo...
she actually says at one point: "You know what it says on the car - TO PROTECT AND SERVE"
saluuuute

veterinary and canine slant on police procedural!
Worked for me, despite only average narration, and Denver/eastern Rockies small town setting familiar and well rendered.
German shepherd Robo, as tracker-dog for deputy sheriff Mattie, is a credible character, not over-done, and with minimal anthropomorphism. A competent mystery plot with a great small-town America backcloth, enhanced by the veterinary and canine elements.
Trying to avoid a plot-spoiler, but I have to mention how Robo leading Mattie out of a 'couldn't see a hand in front of your face' situation really resonated with me, having been 'rescued' by Monty, my labrador/springer spaniel cross, from benightment in Australian tropical rainforest.
Suspect that the series may eventually become formulaic, but for now I am hooked, already almost finished book 2!
