Publisher's Summary

At a remote ice station in Antarctica, a team of U.S. scientists has made an amazing discovery. They have found something buried deep within a 100-million-year-old layer of ice. Something made of metal. Led by enigmatic Lieutenant Shane Schofield, a team of crack United States Marines is sent to the station to secure this discovery for their country. They are a tight unit, tough and fearless. They would follow their leader into hell. They just did...

Critic Reviews

"Some of the wildest and most sustained battles in an action thriller in a long time...non-stop action, lots of explosions--and a little bit of conspiracy." ( Chicago Tribune)

good story cringy military descriptions

good story but the military refrences were very "i used google" and everytime he describes a weapon anyone who knows better will cringe. doesnt break the book but it does hurt it especially with very similir books out there that are written by ex servicemen or at least consulted. one big props is to his accuracy with the science side of things but bieng a military man myself the previously mentioned did wreck parts of the book for me.

Do some research if you're writing a novel!

Anyone with a basic grasp of diving, underwater optics, explosives and GPS signals will be frustrated with the inaccurate scenarios depicted in this story.

A great book - for 14 year old boys

I only got to 2 hours in, and that was because I was working outside and couldn't be bothered going in to get a new book.
Cliche riddled nonsense.

utter drivel

nothing in this story makes sense.

From absolutely everything wrong about the ice sheets in Antarctica, killer whales with "razor sharp teeth" to CFC somehow being flammable.

I just couldn't finish the story. it is too stupid for words

Great book, narration is kinda weird

I've read the book before, its solid and Sean Mangan does a reasonable job of the narration, however, there are quite a few skips and the recording is filled with the sounds of Sean stopping to take a gulp of water. A bit offputting.

what is that accent

I actually loved the story, but can't handle the accent. It is an Aussie with American "r" sounds. I only just managed to drag myself through it as the story is quite compelling... which is a testament to the story really.
I would actually love to buy the rest of the series, but I seriously can't put up with the accent. Which is a shame as the timbre of his voice is nice, just he needs to pick a continent.

Great story! Action packed! Never bored.

Amazing novel by such a talented writer! The story is great and seems very accurate scientifically. Reilly must have put so much research time in for the writing of this book! Ice Station is absolutely full of action and it flows beautifully, so you're never bored. Matthew Reilly has done an amazing job. Great book mate!

Amazingly bad writing.

This was either written by a teenage boy or a hundred smoking monkeys on typewriters.
Good narration.

Over the top and very silly

The narration could have been cut to around 8 hours if the repetitive action scenes had been edited. I kept thinking I'd jumped back a couple of episodes - but no, just the same action happening in various parts of the boat or ocean.

I got the feeling the book was written with a movie in mind.

Now I've read the reviews I wish I hadn't just downloaded the audio book on the author's reputation alone - although to be fair I now realise the book was released 10 years ago so that may account for the stereotypes and gnarly story line.

The worst kind of trash

This book is awful. It is written in a way that the author is desperate for it to be made into a film. It is filled with clichés. Not even good ones. It’s just so poorly written that it makes you want to roll your eyes. The characters are all cut and pasted from better stories. The dialogue is cringe worthy.
The author has obviously done his research when it comes to tech and military procedures, but for some reason he thinks that the reader needs to know about it. Taking whole paragraphs to describe what model of airplane or hovercraft a certain character is using is wasting everyone’s time. It doesn’t add to the story, and it certainly doesn’t add to the action that you’re trying to contribute to.
This is honestly one of the worst books I’ve read. Roll your eyes now. If that feels good, maybe you’ll love this book, because you’ll be constantly doing it during it.
