Publisher's Summary

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Predicatable soap opera

So predictable and a struggle to get through - so after an hour or so I gave up. Awful

Getting to know you

This story contains an intriguing and complex plot and great characters. The characters are have interesting personalities and they play against each other nicely. The DI is skimming the edge of the law and has to take on a new DS to save her career. They both only know of each other through police gossip. Each member of the team is not quite what they seem to the police outside their unit. As the case develops we get to see what they are really like and how they pull together.
The ‘bad guys’ are evil and show no remorse for anything they do. There are a few moments where I thought that the police were not going to make it out of the situation they were in.
The accents of the characters were varied and generally well done. The accent for DC Cat annoyed me as it seemed to be too much in the teen girl mode rather than a mid twenties police officer.
I’ve read the DI Jackman series and am now going back to catch up on the Nikki Galena series. I’m looking forward to a strong and exciting series.

Ok

The story was great but I struggled with the reader. It let down the whole book so reflects on the entire series

I tried, I failed

Such hard going. The story is not very riveting and the narration is very harsh and irritating.
Not my cuppa

Great book spoilt by dreadful narrator

Joy Ellis is a great author and this book does not disappoint however the narrator really does disappoint! Poor accents and voices of characters annoying (some so annoying I shouted out loud whilst driving and walking the dogs). A real shame as I want to listen to the rest of this series but I don’t know if I can bear the narration.

Gruff

Disappointed with this after the other joy ellis I have read , the narrative pushes the gruff accent terribly, it annoyed me so much it took me 3 tries to get to chapter four, but I couldn’t stand this readers attitude, sorry I will be asking for an exchange, first time

Wonderful

I was hesitant to start this series after reading the more recent DI Jackman books by Joy Ellis, primarily because I didn't want my affection for her writing to be dulled by any earlier novels. This one however, was excellent. A good and concise storyline with great characters and as always, a very well balanced level of violence, suspense and humour.
Very excited at the multitude of books in this series and can't wait to start on another.

Here it begins

This is the first in a great series of books.
Set in a bleak part of the world, beautifully narated, and described.
A great beginning for all the characters used in the series of novels. A wonderful story, and a different type of location
