Powerful themes are never incidental. They emerge from the conjunction of strong plots and resonant character arcs. This means you can learn to plan and implement theme. In doing so, you will deepen your ability to write not only stories that entertain, but also stories that stay with readers long after the end. Conscious mastery of theme will elevate every story you write and allow you to craft fiction of depth and meaning. Take control of your story via a powerful implementation of theme.

There are three kinds of feelings when reading a story: boredom, interest, and wow! To become a successful writer, you must create the wow feeling on as many pages as possible, and this requires writing that engages the reader emotionally. In his best-selling book, screenwriter Karl Iglesias explored the working habits of A-list Hollywood scribes. Now, he breaks new ground by focusing on the psychology of the reader.

Story
The Story Grid is a tool developed by editor Shawn Coyne to analyze stories and provide helpful editorial comments. It's like a CT Scan that takes a photo of the global story and tells the editor or writer what is working, what is not, and what must be done to make what works better and fix what's not. The Story Grid breaks down the component parts of stories to identify the problems. And finding the problems in a story is almost as difficult as the writing of the story itself (maybe even more difficult).

Story
It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

Most screenwriting books tend to focus on story structure, scene writing, navigating the business, and other parts of the craft that come after the initial choice of the central concept for a story. Multiple Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning writer/producer Erik Bork (HBO’s Band of Brothers) takes a different approach. His experience in the industry and as a screenwriting professor and coach have led him to recognize that it's the selection of the initial idea that is the most important part of the process - with the most impact on the project's chance of success.

it's good I guess but...
without a summary PDF it's too much info for audiobook.
The narrator was very good with nice voice that understood the book.
This book made me understand why Homers Odyssea is the most influential book ever written,
everything after it, it's pretty much the same story..

Great listen but needs an accompanying PDF.
The book is pack with fantastic information. The audio book, I felt, needed a crib sheet for future reference as there are many lists and summaries that warrants revisiting, which is difficult to navigate if like me, you only have the audio book with no bookmarking facilities. A valuable aid for future writers and those who want a deeper understanding of the writers craft.
With a PDF, I would have given triple '5' review.

Another Good Reference Book for Writers
If you are new or unfamiliar with the terminology used in story structure I suggest that you first read ‘Structuring Your Novel’ in order to get the best from ‘Creating Character Arcs’. Both books are very good reference materials for writers and as K. M. Weiland points out ‘plot structure and character arc are integral to one another’. Since both references are stand-alone books it’s not surprising that there is an overlap in the material covered. Therefore, if you have read ‘Structuring Your Novel’ first then I suggest leaving some time before reading ‘Creating Character Arcs’. This will allow you to approach the material fresh and absorb the new information on character arcs without doing a mental comparison of both books as I did. I am happy to have both books as references and find that going through the checklists and questions is helping to improve my writing.

not loving this full of buzzwords
I'm about halfway through this and can't continue. it's just rammed with buzz words and superficial references to books and movies and TV shows that don't mean very much. not much in the way of practical information you can act on. it also seems to spend a lot of time trying to get you to read other books written by the author. I have a horrible feeling that if you followed the author's advice you would just end up with a story that it is massively over structured.
