Publisher's Summary

When Mrs. Dashwood is forced by an avaricious daughter-in-law to leave the family home in Sussex, she takes her three daughters to live in a modest cottage in Devon. For Elinor, the eldest daughter, the move means a painful separation from the man she loves, but her sister Marianne finds in Devon the romance and excitement which she longs for. The contrasting fortunes and temperaments of the two girls as they struggle to cope in their different ways with the cruel events which fate has in store for them are portrayed by Jane Austen with her usual irony, humour, and profound sensibility.

Wonderful.

Juliet Stephenson is the best Austen narrator by far. I'm moving next to her other narrations.

A classic performed well

Juliet Stevenson does justice to this classic work. Her performance of the quiet repose of Elinor Dashwood could not be replicated by a more melodramatic narrator without sounding synthetic. And yet, she captures the spirited exclamations of Marianne, if a trifle stressed, and the affectations of the Steele's in an unobtrusive manner.
I'm always amused by attempts of narrators of one sex to perform the part of the other, but Stevenson is not unduly lacking in credulity for such performances.
All in all, the narration does not subtract from the text, if anything she adds to the experience.

The performance is extraordinary.

I was never inclined to read Jane Austen's work previously. Just thought I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did. It's brilliant. So fascinating knowing that a book placed in the 18th century was written then. I was transported back in time.
The performance is also brilliant. You won't be disappointed.

Superb in every way

The narration of this book is the best Is superb in every way. If there was an Oscar for narration this would be the winner. I had only seen the movie of Sense and Sensibility. I now marvel at the brilliant adaption for the movie by Emma Thompson. She kept every vital nuance. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and highly recommend it.

Juliet Stevenson is Incredible

Juliet Stevenson is the most perfect person to narrate this story, she does an impeccable job at bringing the characters to life. I enjoyed this book to the full thanks to her.

Difficult at first, beautiful as it went on

I think it is the medium of audio that affected my enjoyment of this book. I've read it, I've watched several adaptations, but listening made me really incensed on the part of the Dashwoods at the treatment they received from their (half) sister-in-law. I found it physically difficult to keep listening.

Of course, as things proceeded, the immediacy of the emotions I felt became less irritating - avarice is such an irritating vice!, and the reading, the pleasure of Austen's writing - well, sheer delight in much loved characters.

I've found that the Naxos editions are generally the best readings. The Jane Eyre read by Amanda Root is the best audiobook I have ever listened to, and this is in the top 10.
