Publisher's Summary

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.
Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

Masterpiece and superbly read.

I bought the Penguin Classic edition many years ago. Its solidity and the first pages of the story did not present an easy read especially when my busy life made any book hard to take on. Thanks to Audible i was able finally to tackle this masterful work. I listened to most of the book and occasionally read parts in my Penguin. I doubt i will come across a better reader anywhere. Juliet Stevenson read each character male or female, as well as the narrators part, sensitively, with great naturalness, and this perfect audible edition sparkled.

Magnificent, Juliet Stevenson is beyond compare!

It is almost impossible to describe how spellbinding is Juliet Stevenson's rendition of this outstanding novel. I am sure nobody needs me to pronounce on the genius of George Elliot's masterpiece but whether it is an old favourite or a new discovery- you could not do better than stop here to discover or rediscover its many delights. Listening to this audiobook has been thrilling - every character brought to life as if one had been at a full cast dramatisation.
