Story
Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.

An old-fashioned but enjoyable story
- By Jen on 06-05-2019
Publisher's Summary
The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire.
Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.
At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

a true classic read by a veteran performer
I just adored every second of this experience, a bit of a sad story in some ways but that just makes it more realistic - the characters and story make it a memorable and colourful experience which transforms one to another time!
I read this classic in my teens 35 years ago and it seemed beautiful and memorable then, and listening to this in my early 50s it is memorable and beautiful for totally different reasons - and the fact that it is read soo beautifully and masterfully by Jeremy Irons (whom I saw in the original BBC series) adds a further layer and beauty to this experience.

I could listen to Jeremy Irons read a car manual
Jeremy Irons delivers another masterful performance ( I previously listened to his narration of Lolita). It is a peculiar novel and certainly not my usual cup of tea (British pun intended), but is written in beautiful language and does a good job exploring things like class, love, religion, purpose, and a haunting meditation on the tradition and history fading away.

THE voice for Brideshead Revisited
I loved Jeremy Irons’ absolutely pitch-perfect narration of Brideshead Revisited; in fact, I find it difficult to imagine anyone else coming close. Just a delightful narration of Waugh’s memorable classic.

A brilliant tragic story brilliantly read
Jeremy Irons reading is excellent. Having acted the lead role in the BBC production in the 1980s. his reading is reminiscent of that production, but of course the story is more complete than the TV version The story is tragic but keeps your attention.

Not enough superlatives to do justice
Everything about this book and Jeremy Irons' narration is superb. Every time I re-read or re-listen to this masterpiece I discover something new or find a new take-away. No review can do it justice - if you haven't read Brideshead, Jeremy Irons' performance is the perfect place to start.

Perfectly read, captivating story
Jeremy Irons is the perfect narrator, both for Waugh's luscious prose, and his varied characters.
The story, though now historical, is a timeless exploration of love, faith and society. I was transported.

One of finest novels ever and beautifully narrated
Whenever I want to be reassured that, at a time when mediocrity and author self- indulgence dominate the literary scene, there once was excellence, I listen to this book. It's a wonderful example of outstanding literary achievement, and Iron's superb narration does it the justice it so richly deserves.
If only there were many more like it!
