Publisher's Summary

The Nazis presented themselves as warriors against moral degeneracy. Yet, as Norman Ohler's gripping best seller reveals, the entire Third Reich was permeated with drugs: cocaine, heroin, morphine and, most of all, methamphetamines, or crystal meth, used by everyone from factory workers to housewives, and crucial to troops; resilience - even partly explaining German victory in 1940.

The promiscuous use of drugs at the very highest levels also impaired and confused decision-making, with Hitler and his entourage taking refuge in potentially lethal cocktails of stimulants administered by the physician Dr Morell as the war turned against Germany. While drugs cannot on their own explain the events of the Second World War or its outcome, Ohler shows, they change our understanding of it. Blitzed forms a crucial missing piece of the story.

A new perspective

I had little knowledge about the pervasiveness of amphetamines in WW2 Germany but the evidence is there. It provides an interesting perspective into the course of the war from the view of drug use and abuse. There’s good content there and it’s worth listening to. There’s a lot of overly harsh critiques of this work. Probably best to make up your own mind.

Blitzes my way through this superb book

Left me feeling heightened and full of vitality. extremely informative. A fascinating and largely dismissed aspect of the regimes sordid history.

Absolutely killed it!

This is an exceptionally appropriate reading of a mind blowing and enormous variable that shaped world history. The chemical underpinnings of everything Hitler, the narcissistic psychopath who’s every explosive bodily function co-occurs with every explosive destruction of life outside the bunker. Told with appropriate doses of sarcasm, humour and casual disbelief, this book is so cleverly written and told.

Currently High on Knowledge!

Absolutely love this audiobook. It’s a fascinating analysis about an unknown part of history from the darkest days of the modern world - it also makes fascinating conversation at dinner parties, 10/10 would recommend to the curious and the fact tweakers (sorry, not sorry lol) who love to get high on history.

Informative

A interesting angle on the Nazi regime, one that I am pretty shocked isn’t factored into other historical records more frequently. Duration is great for a short listen. Performance was good, just a same-y with delivery of notes, personal records. Great listen overall
