One woman.

Ten thousand miles on foot.

Six countries.

Eight pairs of hiking boots.

Three thousand cups of tea.

One thousand days and nights.

"The only way to survive three years of walking was to embrace the moment of now." - from Wild by Nature

Not since Cheryl Strayed gifted us with her adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail in her memoir, Wild, has there been such a powerful epic adventure by a woman alone. In Wild by Nature, National Geographic explorer Sarah Marquis takes you on the trail of her 10,000-mile solo hike across the remote Gobi desert from Siberia to Thailand, at which point she was transported by boat to complete the hike at her favorite tree in Australia.

Against nearly insurmountable odds and relying on hunting and her own wits, Sarah Marquis survived the Mafia, drug dealers, thieves on horseback who harassed her tent every night for weeks, temperatures from subzero to scorching, life-threatening wildlife, a dengue fever delirium in the Laos jungle, tropic ringworm in northern Thailand, dehydration, and a life-threatening abscess.

This is an incredible story of adventure, human ingenuity, persistence, and resilience that shows firsthand what it is to adventure as a woman in the most dangerous of circumstance, what it is to be truly alone in the wild, and why someone would challenge themselves with an expedition others would call crazy. For Marquis, her story is about freedom, being alive and wild by nature.

Moving and magical

I have actually already read the print copy but I felt compelled to listen to it again on audible. The story is one that has profoundly affected my life previously and while the narrators Voice takes a little warming to, I was not disappointed at all that I spent the extra credit in revisiting this magical tale of an extraordinary woman‘s journey.
With her profound insights into so many things I hold dear, this book is more than just another adventure story.

I can highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys insights into the human spirit, independent adventuring or simply learning about other cultures that is seldom glimpsed in traditional travels.

Allow yourself to be swept away for hours and take forward with you an insight into your own possibilities.

A truly exceptional human being and a wonderful addition to any audiobook library.

Thank you Sarah!

Why is she out there? What drives her?

I had really high hopes for this. It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite live up to them.

The author never really shares her soul. She held so much back that it really devalued the story. I don't want to give anything away, but you will ask yourself. OK, but why doesn't she just? Or, why did she do that? You will never understand her struggles within as she never shares them. You get hints at it at times, but not enough to know her. You can't mentally walk in her shoes as you can with so many of this theme.

On the other side, she does share detailed descriptions of her journeys, which at times are fascinating. Though other parts of her journey where rather glossed over I felt. Though parts where a real eye opener for me and genuinely shocking. I couldn't stop listening to some chapters because of this. These sections would have got 5 stars.

The actual reading of the book is a bit "flat" at the start, but gets better as it progresses.

So I would absolutely recommend this. Its worth it. An although this isn't 5* material in my view. I would be very interested in hearing anything else she writes (in English :) ).

Mammoth Journey

A few false starts due to the narrator’s accent. But the adventure called me back. Starts off well, I love the finer detail of travel. The self reflection as well as finer view on humanity and it’s destructive ways is well put without dampening too much of the journey. However I felt like it skipped over great distances and travel detail sometimes. Is the nature of self documented travel I understand. Enjoyable adventure, despite the misadventures faced and detours made.
