Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read is the son of a strict Seventh Day Adventist mother and a shell-shocked former soldier who slept with a loaded gun at his side. James Phelps explores all the questions that we can only barely imagine the answers to about Australia's toughest jails. This is a brutal and honest account of life inside Australia's toughest jails, and all is not as you would expect. Do women rape each other? Do guards really trade 40-cent phone cards for sex? And do you think the most dangerous inmate in Australia is a man? This is the most comprehensive ever account of women's prison life yet.

Great read
- By Alpacaman on 16-09-2017
Publisher's Summary
This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight. "This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner...
Mark "Chopper" Read is over 50 years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to pull out a man's colostomy bag (like a rope going through a barbed-wire fence). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense.More from the same

Brilliant from start to finish!
Having already listened to Chopper’s first two books, I was expecting this one to be good also. I was wrong. It’s better! A real insight of what it was like to serve time in Pentridge prison, and myriad of characters MBR came into contact with. Superbly narrated as well. If you still manage to continue listening after Mark’s chapter two’s Yugoslav encounter, then you have more coming! Hard to put down!
