Editorial reviews

Praise for The Fry Chronicles:

"Heartbreaking, a delight, a lovely, comfy book". (The Times)"Perfect prose and excruciating honesty. A grand reminiscence of college and theatre and comedyland in the 1980s, with tone-perfect anecdotes and genuine readerly excitement. What Fry does, essentially, is tell us who he really is. Above all else, a thoughtful book. And namedroppy too, and funny, and marbled with melancholy." (Observer)

Entrancing

Erudite, witty, funny and very human. I know I will listen again because when it is finished, I feel like I am missing a friend.

A little off balance.

Fry's narration is excellent. And large chunks are quite interesting but i found some parts over drawn particularly the diary section at the end. I kept wondering if that was the last one.

i suppose that makes it sound like i hated it but i am looking forward to the next one.

Enjoyable but slightly confused at the end

I love Stephen Fry, though on this 3rd instalment, I can't help but feel slightly confused about the sometimes-hinted-at, or explicitly-foreshadowed disasters, which never actually materialised. I didn't really want to hear about great tragedy, but it struck me as a strange setup and occasional reminder towards events that didn't seem to occur. Perhaps the subject or content of the next entry, though in that case, slightly mysterious to me why there was emphasis to that effect in this one.

All up, a pleasure to listen to Fry narrate his life for a dozen hours, but then, hearing him narrate a cookbook would also be tremendous.

Good read as expected of Mr Fry

a good read of recent history, but sadly unlike Mr Fry's documentary on mental health, which is truly outstanding, this seemed to lack a little in depth. Honest, certainly but a little light on as to how his addiction affected him. But an enjoyable read none the less, of course with Mr Fry how could it not be enjoyable.

funny, dark, fantastic

I have enjoyed this book enough to have read through twice now. Fry makes you laugh, brings you to years but I found myself completely captured with this book. I enjoyed hearing his stories and watching a part of his life unfold. I do feel it ended a little early and expect we shall see a further volume in time

A proud humble extraordinarily gifted man tells of himself with honesty and humour.

Stephen Fry is a snob and name dropper who manages to be proud and conceited and humble and self-critical. In this, his third amusing autobiography, he reveals more of himself in a humorous and at times self-mocking manner.

Bit of a fizzer

Some excellent anecdotes throughout. Great first half but the diary entries in the latter half became tiresome. Spent most of the time wondering when they'd end and he'd return to the original format.
