Publisher's Summary

The Falklands War was one of the strangest in British history - 28,000 men sent to fight for a tiny relic of empire 8,000 miles from home.

At the time, many Britons saw it as a tragic absurdity, but the British victory confirmed the quality of British arms and boosted the political fortunes of the Conservative government. But it left a chequered aftermath; it was of no wider significance for British interests and taught no lessons. It has since been overshadowed by the two Gulf Wars, however, its political ramifications cannot be overestimated. Max Hastings’ and Simon Jenkins’ account of the conflict is a modern classic of war reportage and the definitive book on the war. Republished as part of the Pan Military Classics series, The Battle for the Falklands is a vivid chronicle of a call to arms and a thoughtful and informed analysis of an astonishing chapter in the history of our times. Max Hastings, author of over 20 books, has been editor of the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard. He has won many awards for his journalism, particularly his work in the south Atlantic in 1982.

Argentina good...Britain bad.

An exceedingly well researched and detailed account spoilt by a sanctimonious, supercilious and disdainful bias against Britains political leadership. Not one positive reference to Margaret Thatcher throughout.
Whilst the narrators voice is pleasing in the rendition, he reminds me very much of a disgruntled armchair warrior finding fault with everything....in hindsight of course. Very little mention is given to residents who were overwhelmingly delighted to remain Brits. A little like Hong Kong today to some degree, and sadly a very different outcome.

The book feels like a lecture. An example of the bias is the author's praising of Argentinian war ethics, equal to Britain's, and the shooting of a British soldier waving a white flag merely, "merely the actions of a peasant soldier".

Overall, irritating but worth reading, just.

From Nothing to Knowledgeable.

When I started this book I knew nothing about the Falklands War apart from where the Falklands are on the map, So I brought this book to learn what I could. Battle of the Falklands has the origin of the war going back year about why both country wanted the Island and going forward to the last day of the "war" Completely what I was looking for and would recommend this book.

The Definitive Book of the Falkland Islands War

If you want to understand the Falkland Islands War then look no further. This is an excellent book covering the whole history of the conflict, right from the earliest days of the discovery of the Islands to the competing claims of sovereignty over them. It's an excellent analysis of the steps leading up to the conflict and the political/diplomatic sphere that is so overlooked in many books about conflict.

It doesn't spare any aspect of the conflict, the chapters about the sinking of the HMS Sheffield and the Battle of Goose Green were riveting. It also leaves space for casting some judgmental about the conflict and the performance of the armed forces of both Argentina and Britain and the major political players.

This book is highly recommended.

Overall

Max Hastings’ overview seems very reminiscent of the pre- ww2 appeasement policy which so spectacularly failed with another tyrannical dictatorship

A magnificent narration

I listened to it several times and then read the book. Scholarly and thorough, it covered the conflict in a most evenhanded way.

Fascinating insights

I grew up in Southampton and was surrounded by the military build up. This book dives deep in to the political background of the conflict and the subsequent conflict 8,000 miles away. The insights are very firmly from the British point of view and it was a shame more insights from the Argentine side were not available at the time.

Would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in the war.

Engaging and informative the whole way through

An good listen that provides a nuanced perspective to the British history of this war, and some understanding of what was happening in Argentina. Presents a complex situation well with no jingoism but instead a deep respect for all the armed forces involved. Both authors clearly understand that the idea of ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’ doesn’t do history, nor the realities of people’s lives, justice.

They write clearly and precisely, but the book is not a dry text. It acknowledges the impact of war on the people involved. I recommend it to anyone interested in the story of this war, and also those interested in how war was waged in the late 20th century by a country that has had a tradition of martial excellence going back several hundred years.

Excellent book

Interesting to see how people don't communicate with each other In times of war and negotiations over major political disputes.
