Poor James Bond.

Just made a 00 agent and losing his girl as well as becoming a murderer of a CIA agent?

AMAZING NARRATION.

While Bond books aren’t really my thing but this story is actually really engaging and enjoyable. Matthew Goode is a brilliant narrator complete with amazing accents and I really hope he does some more audiobooks. Would Recommend.

Fast-paced but read too fast

The story itself is excellent but the listener is left breathless by the speed at which the reader is reading. Although in time the listener adapts I almost gave up during the first couple of chapters.

Solid prequel to Casino Royale

The year if 1950 and British intelligence is worried about unusual activity in Marseille’s underworld so they send one of their elite agents to check it out, but 007 is murdered. His replacement? A young man named Bond. James Bond.

That’s the premise of Anthony Horowitz’s second James Bond novel ‘Forever and a Day’ which acts as a prequel to Ian Fleming’s ‘Casino Royale’ & it must have been a trepidatious task to explore the origins of James Bond - or not quite the origins per se but telling the story of Bond on his very first assignment after earning his 00 status. Having finished the book I’d say Mr. Horowitz succeeded for the most part - he has crafted a fun but mostly straightforward thriller with all the tropes you expect in your standard Bond novel.

Anthony Horowitz does a fine job capturing Ian Fleming’s style of storytelling & his James Bond is definitely a mixture of the literary Bond of Fleming’s novels & Sean Connery’s cinematic portrayal of the secret agent. What I appreciated most was that Horowitz didn’t try to ignore the dated facets of Bond’s personality (i.e. his misogyny, sexism & occasional racism) but rather embraced those facets full-on. Bond is a product of his time - especially in the timeline that Horowitz is playing in & thus the original incarnation of the character should not be shied away from.

If you’re for a Bond novel with all the classic elements that you’ve come to expect than look no further than Forever and a Day. You’ll get your action, your exotic locations, your colourful villain & the beautiful Bond girl (the Bond girl in this book named Sixtine is actually the most interesting character in the book & quite complex)

Love this book

I haven’t always like James Bond!
But Matthew Goode is truely talented, he knows how to do all the different voice of the characters so well, making this easy and enjoyable to listen too.
He has a wonderful voice for audiobooks and hope this is the first of many for Matthew Goode. Glad he reads this book as I know he is a big James Bond fan so I pray he reads others

Fantastic prequel

Another awesome story from Anthony Horowitz. He was able to gauge the era of Bonds early days without being totally misogynistic!
He shows his moralistic side by righting wrongs. Great character development throughout. Superb 😊
I agree the speed of the narrator was quite fast but at 0.9 speed was easy to follow.

Return to form.

Long time fan of Bond fiction and this story read like the old Bond novels of Fleming and Gardner. Recommended read for true fans.
