Publisher's Summary

8th April 2009 was just an ordinary day for Richard Phillips, captain of the Maersk Alabama as it headed towards the port of Mombasa. Ordinary that is until, armed Somali pirates attacked and boarded the freighter.

Captain Phillips offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew, and so began a tense five-day stand-off, which ended in a daring high-seas rescue by U.S. Navy SEALs.

Movie is much better

3 stars

Let me start by saying, I probably would have believed this a lot more if we could have heard from a few more of the parties involved. In the back of my head, while reading this, I was constantly think "if he was there just to keep his crew safe wtf are they suing him?"

There were elements of this book I found really interesting, I enjoyed the history of the merchant mariners and I enjoyed the story of what happened to Phillip's wife while the ordeal was happening.Would have loved for her own words to be interjected instead of relying on a second hand account of what happened.

I also don't really understand how he managed to keep speaking into the radio? Did the pirates not hear him?

There were a few holes in this account and I probably wouldn't bother reading this one..

Movie is much better.

Hard to listen to

To be honest I had to stop listening after a few chapters. I listen through the car and the narrator pronounces 's' sounds with a whistle. To me it was really annoying as these sounds were piercing.
