Story
Just before her 40th birthday, Gail Francis quit her perfectly good job and set out to hike one of the great trails of the world. Carrying everything she needed on her back, Francis spent five months walking from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, she lost her pack scrambling over scree in the desert, struggled to navigate high mountain passes, and wore the soles off her boots trekking across lava fields - all within some of the most pristine wilderness in the nation. Though she set out alone, her story includes an eclectic cast of characters.

Story
At age 22, Charlie Walker left home in search of adventure. Fleeing the boredom that comes with comfort, he set off on a secondhand bicycle. The aim was simple: to pedal to the furthest point in each of Europe, Asia, and Africa. He didn’t train or plan. He just started. The journey was an escape from an unremarkable existence, a pursuit of hardship, and a chance to shed the complacency of middle England. From the brutality of winter on the Tibetan plateau, to the claustrophobia of the Southeast Asian jungle, the quest provided Charlie with ample opportunity to test his mettle.

The perfect audiobook
- By Justin on 11-02-2017
Publisher's Summary
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning. This is not merely a travel guide; it is a beautifully written and highly personal view into one man’s journey and the insights gained by abandoning what is comfortable and routine.

Happy Trail
I really enjoyed this yarn. A very interesting and enjoyable story of a trek along the AT. The author gives a frank recount of the people he meets, and his trials and tribulations along the way; but also lots of good memories and experiences, without endlessly lamenting the bad parts, as other authors seem to.
I’d happily listen to this one again, and probably will :-D

A good hiking book.
This is a book about hiking. I really enjoyed it. But I’m a hiker. I’d imagine it might not be as great for non hikers. But I really like the story and the way it was told. Unlike many other hiking books it managed to avoid the drudgery of hiking: sleep eat hike repeat.

How to experience the AT close to home
What made the experience of listening to AWOL on the Appalachian Trail the most enjoyable?
It's funny, well-written, engaging and really informative. I'd love to walk the AT but listening to David Miller's experience has made me realise that I've been romanticising the notion a bit.
What did you like best about this story?
The detail and information in this audio book is fantastic, any expectations of walking the AT after listening to it are realistic.
What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?
It's easy listening...come to think of it, I wasn't so much aware of the narration but the book, so on that basis I'd have to rate Christopher's performance pretty high.

I did like the book, put me to sleep every night. Really opened my eyes about thru hikers.had never realised before that the AT was so full of hikers who were literally compelled to get to the end.
