2.5/5

I've read a few time travel books this year, this is one I didn't really enjoy. Katie for me was very unlikeable, I found the apprentice's the most interesting part and would have preferred hearing more about them . narrator did a decent job.

Enjoyed it overall

Almost stopped listening in the beginning. Glad I persisted. Sad there’s no audiobook for second book

Another good read from John Burmingham.

John Birmingham presents another imaginative story, and if not for the irritating inclusion of 'young, feisty American woman with attitude ', I would have rated it higher. There are some characters a reader will never warm to. Katie McCol is one of these.

Enjoyed this book

Loved the story, found the main characters very likeable. Narration was good. Maybe not as thrilling as other books by John Birmingham, but this is a theme I enjoy.

Men can write women

The main character is a poor millennial with the inner dialogue that only a rich white boomer dude who can barely use Facebook could render.
She’s not a crazy feminist like all those other girls, she’s a cool normal centrist gamer girl just trying to get back to her own reality so she can enjoy being rich for the first time.

Not sure where the folks calling this socialist propaganda were coming from because that’s why I read it and now I feel ripped off.
The trump hate felt lazily overt and halfhearted, like the author and publishers were feverishly clawing to rope in a younger audience without really understanding what we care about and why.

The references were outdated before they hit the press in 2016 and there’s nothing more cringe than hearing “buzzfeed article” touted as some kind of achievement.

Ultimately it says and does nothing new or even interesting.

Better than you expect

I wouldn’t have given this book a shot based on its blurb but it was recommended & I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

I’m not a fan of time travel in general but really enjoyed it in this cause. Rarely is time travel done so well and rarely are authors comfortable enough to leave some of the problems with the concept of time travel open ended. It doesn’t try to justify itself which is quite rare (though there are parts that really doesn’t make logical sense).

I’m not sure what the target audience is as it mixed young adult styles with an actual adult storyline but all in all I’d definitely recommend it - just be aware that it ends abruptly and that part 2 (the golden hour) isn’t on audible.
