Publisher's Summary

National Book Critics Circle, Fiction, 2009

Composed in the last years of Roberto Bolaño’s life, 2666 was greeted across Europe and Latin America as his highest achievement, surpassing even his previous work in its strangeness, beauty, and scope. Its throng of unforgettable characters includes academics and convicts, an American sportswriter, an elusive German novelist, and a teenage student and her widowed, mentally unstable father. Their lives intersect in the urban sprawl of Santa Teresa—a fictional Juárez—on the U.S.-Mexico border, where hundreds of young factory workers, in the novel as in life, have disappeared.

Critic Reviews

This winner of the 2008 National Book Critics' Circle Award for Fiction is the master work from "one of the greatest and most influential modern writers" (New York Times Book Review)

"...think of David Lynch, Marcel Duchamp (both explicitly invoked here) and the Bob Dylan of Highway 61 Revisited, all at the peak of their lucid yet hallucinatory powers." (New York Times)

"It is safe to predict that no novel this year will have as powerful an effect on the reader as this one." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Sprawling work engulfs pleasurably

This sprawling novel in five diverse parts feels like being swallowed whole by an ocean of currents and amazing sights. The detailed descriptions of places, the lengthy dialogues that in their triviality and banality (and occasional laugh-out-loud humour) build not just a picture of life but a sense of life itself. The calm delivery of shocking images together make this an amazing and pleasurable 40 hours.

modern literary fiction

this is a story of themes driven in fiction but presenting a number of interesting real world problems of crime, family, guilt, ideology, corruption and more. don't expect a traditional beginning middle and end but listen for the experience and expression. if you can do this i think you'll find yourself in a thoroughly
captivating and unsettling world.

Worth sticking with

To me this novel seems to gradually pick up pace as the threads slowly wind into a good stout rope, with little trivial asides wetting the appetite for what’s coming next. I think the English speaking world needs to take heed and our publishers need to give authors the opportunity to give readers a chance to be enthralled by a work such as this.
