Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was first published in 1960. The coming-of-age story is set in the 1930s in a small town in the American South. It is the masterfully told story of the struggle for justice a black man faces after having been accused of raping a white women. The book explores themes of racial inequality and social injustice in what is a gripping tale of the pursuit of justice in a time of violent and deep-seated racial prejudice. The book was made into a movie in 1962. The To Kill a Mockingbird film went on to win a Writers Guild of America award as well as a number of Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

At a news conference two years after the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee was asked how she felt about writing a second novel, to which she responded, “I’m scared”. For nearly six decades a second novel did not come. That changed in 2015 when Go Set a Watchman was controversially published just months before the author’s death at age 89. The release of Go Set a Watchman came about after the manuscript was discovered in a safe deposit box, and passed on to a publishing house by Lee’s lawyer. Many believe Lee never intended for Go Set a Watchman to be published – something Lee’s lawyer contests.

Lee spent much of her life out of the public eye, politely yet insistently turning down interview requests and eschewing most public appearances. A rare public appearance came when Lee was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her "outstanding contribution to America's literary tradition" at a ceremony at the White House in 2007.

Lee’s full name was Nelle Harper Lee, however, not wanting to be known as ‘Nellie’, she opted to publish under the simplified moniker ‘Harper Lee’. Harper Lee was born on 28 April 1926 and died 19 February 2016 in Alabama in the United States.
